I was recently asked this by Wendy who is getting married in October.

In a nutshell, they typically deal with the hard (non-perishable) elements.

Here’s a basic list of thing you would expect to find with decorator:

  • Backdrop, head table and cake table decorative
  • Linens such as tablecloths, runners, napkins
  • Table accessories such as chargers
  • Rental items such as candelabras, possibly some glass ware although most of it is purchased now

Having said this, as with any creative endavours, there are as many variations of “decorator” as there  are varieties of roses, because everyone brings their own unique element to decorating.

One thing a decorator (if they are calling themselves that) typically are not are florists or they would say they are both.

I have always felt that the decoratives and the flowers are part of one visual element, so I bring both elements together.

While everyone approaches their planning differently, my clients appreciate the savings of time  and the convenience of dealing with one vendor as opposed to two.

Hope this helps Wendy and thanks for the question!
