A Lovely Wedding in the Distillery District

Wednesday, July 7th, 2010

I’ve been fully immersed in weddings for the past couple of months and haven’t had a chance to feature some of the amazing clients I have had the chance to work whose weddings took place recently, so I’m so pleased to be able write this post about Christine and Ian.

I met Christine in the fall of last year to discuss floral possibilities for her wedding the following spring. All of it was the take place in the Distillery District a place well regarded for ceremonies in the surrounding art galleries and receptions in the numerous excellent restaurants that are situated there.

The combination of the surroundings in addition to her exquisite choice for spring flowers made for a stunning and elegant combination.

The ceremony eventally took place at the Arta Gallery and the dinner reception took place at the acclaimed Boiler House Restaurant.

The combination of the surroundings in addition to the exquisite choice for spring flowers made for a stunning and elegant combination.

Lavish Lilies

Wednesday, June 2nd, 2010

“Aren’t they smelly and don’t they ruin clothes?”

These are usually the major concerns with the lily and the remedies are simple and shouldn’t stop anyone from using this most amazing flower.

In answer to the first one, they don’t all smell. Depends on the type.

As for ruining clothes, the pollens should always be removed then no issue.

As a flower, it’s positive qualities far outweigh any potential downsides to them.

1. They come in the lovliest array of colours. Please don’t ask about blue :-)

2. They are large bloomed so they’re very dramatic when used in large arrangements.

Bouquet Styles Are Changing

Wednesday, May 12th, 2010

For the longest time, the predominant style for bouquet has been the hand-tied or round bouquet which I think was made most popular by Martha Stewart.

But as with all things, I can see that the preference for shape is slowly changing to the style famously carried by Princess Diana when she married Prince Charles.

The long flowing seemingly large and probably heavy bouquet known as the Cascade is coming back updated in a more streamlined and cleaner look.

Even a few years ago, I was hard pressed to remember being asked to make one, but now more and more clients are leaning toward the elegance that such a bouquet brings with it.

So, if you’re getting married in the next year or so, you may end up with one, but a few years ago you might never have considered it.

They’re baaaaccck!

Oh, it seemed just like yesterday when I was writing just before the winter and writing about the peonies we could look forward to in the spring.

They are perfect and a luxury for sure. Especially now, since you’ll only find them coming over the big blue ocean from flower growers extraordinarie - The Dutch.

Doesn’t matter how you use them. On their own in a massive cluster of luxury or a single lush bloom in a vase.

They are a heavenly choice for any wedding taking place in the spring.

“It’s a Wrap”

Wednesday, January 27th, 2010

The possibilities are endless…It’s one of the many reasons why I love what I do.

I believe that every consideration for florals can be created to reflect the vision and style for the wedding day.

Naturally, one of the most focal and personal parts of the flowers are the bouquets especially bridal bouquet and they should be a visual stylistic reflection of the bride who carries the blooms.

This bouquet wrapped in variegated leaves were the perfect touch for Marlene who wanted a balance between classic elegance with a touch of a modern boldness.

Inspiration For The Perfect Bridal Bouquet

Wednesday, December 16th, 2009

There are many places to look for inspiration for a wedding bouquet and these days there’s no shortage of sources.

For me, one of the places that I love to start with is the wedding dress if it has already been decided.

The style, silhouette, the material, the colour, embellishments…the variations especially at this point in time are true endless.

All these elements of this dress can provide lots of ideas as to waht the bouquet could look like especially if you don’t already have a set idea.

It reminds me (and I’m going to date myself here) of the time when I read a story of how Sophie Rhys-Jones (who married Prince Edward in the early nineties) chose her bridal bouquet.

The florist felt inspired by the slightly flared sleeves of her wedding dress and suggested calla lilies to complement the style of the dress.

So while you don’t have to have the dress to begin the process, if you have chosen it already consider looking to it for your floral inspiration.

The Colour Of Good Fortune

What is the colour of good luck?

Well, if you were to rely on modern day references you might say green. But if you were to ask an Asian person reasonably in the know, they would say red.

Considered to be an auspicious colour of good fortune and happiness, it is always to be found in a traditional wedding. In fact, for those who take this very seriously, the colour white on that day is nowhere to be found.

This used to pose a bit of challenge for those planning a wedding about which direction to take with the wedding flowers. Western tradition used to dictate lighter coloured flowers be used, but thankfully wedding flowers in red are no longer so rarely seen that they draw the gasps of the guests who might say quietly “I can’t believe her flowers are red!”.

Now this dramatic colour can be seen everywhere from bouquets and arrangements to centerpieces.

I noticed that it’s been a while since I featured my bouquets.

One of the many really great things about working with flowers is that the possibilities of how they can be arranged, combined and presented is literally endless.

While this might be a scary thought for some, experience (and a lot of it) has taught me that it keeps things fresh and unique.

One such example is a super really fun bouquet that I had the chance to create for Emelyne, who choose me to be her florist all the way from San Francisco.

It all began with an inspiration picture that had of all things in it - purple cabbage!

Mauve and purples combined with texture of leaves and berries…can I say this was fun?

Modern Twist To Pink Wedding Flowers

Light and Dark Pink Wedding Bouquet

I thought I’d continue from last week on the topic of colours for wedding flowers and revisit a colour that ever enduring and regardless of the never ending options that seem appear will always be a popular choice.

Pink as a colour for wedding flowers is timelessing enduring as the ultimate colour of romantic, it can be displayed in its classic soft pastel form or for those looking for a little more pop can incorporate the brighter shades it comes in along with bright green accent to give it that modern twist.

The Power of Purple

Wednesday, September 16th, 2009

It’s been one of the most requested colours this season. Purple.

Always referred to as the colour associated with royalty, it’s a beautiful choice whether mixed with combination of its lighter mauve or lavendar counterpart or combined with other colours that are equally as dramatic as a rich purple can be.
